How do I find out if a work location is underserved?
Determining whether a work location is underserved is essential when pursuing a J-1 waiver or physician national interest waiver. In making this determination, the only opinion that counts is the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, specifically the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). HRSA designates Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/Ps). In most cases, if a practice location falls with a HPSA or MUA/P, the location is considered underserved. However, some Conrad State 30 programs and federal agencies require a location to be in a HPSA only.
HPSAs and MUAs can be searched by address or by state and county. Go to datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/GeoAdvisor/ShortageDesignationAdvisor.aspx to search by address. Type the full address of the prospective work location. Results will appear in four categories: Primary Care HPSAs, Mental Health HPSAs (for psychiatrists), Dental Care HPSAs (for dentists), and MUA/Ps.
To search by state and county, go to hpsafind.hrsa.gov/ for HPSAs and muafind.hrsa.gov/ for MUA/Ps. Select the state and county of the proposed work location. For the HPSA search, you will also want to select the proper category of HPSA. Results commonly appear by census track and sometimes by the name of specific facilities.
